Costa Calma: sea, sun and life
Costa Calma, located in the south of Fuerteventura within the municipality of Pájara, is the gateway to the famous Playas de Jandía. It is an area of peace and tranquility where it is possible to combine a traditional holiday experience with a wide range of activities and services.
Costa Calma does not have a real city centre, apart from a short stretch of Calle Punta de los molinillos where there are some shops, a small supermarket, bars and restaurants. In general, it is the hotels that offer various activities in the area such as water sports or other pastimes to be carried out between the beach and the hotel.
Visitors to Costa Calma can experience the stunning Playa Barca, a relaxing beach with crystal-clear waters ideal for swimming and sunbathing.
The Sotavento Beach is famous for hosting water sports events.
Furthermore, those interested in exploring the depths of the ocean can partake in snorkeling or diving activities.
The region is also known for its natural beauty and offers opportunities for scenic walks and hikes.
The nearby Oasis Park Fuerteventura offers a fantastic day out for families, allowing them to observe and interact with a variety of animals, including the popular camel safari.
For those who want to explore the surroundings of Costa Calma, there are convenient transportation options.
There are buses to Jandia, Morro Jable or Puerto del Rosario, which provide easy access to other attractions and destinations on the island.
In short, Costa Calma has something for everyone, whether you want to relax, explore or have an adventure.
You’re sure to have a great and unforgettable vacation.
The beaches of Costa Calma
Sotavento beach
Sotavento beach, located in Fuerteventura, is truly a gem among the many beautiful beaches on the island.
Its allure is undeniable, and I must admit, it holds a special place in my heart alongside Playa de Cofete.
What sets Sotavento apart is the remarkable sand barrier positioned between 100 and 300 meters from the shore, creating a magnificent three-kilometer-long lagoon.
This natural formation not only adds to the breathtaking scenery but also provides the perfect conditions for windsurfing and kite surfing enthusiasts. It’s no wonder that Sotavento is considered one of the ideal beaches for both practicing and learning these thrilling water sports.
One of the most exciting events that take place at Sotavento beach is the Kitesurfing and Windsurfing World Championships, scheduled in July. This prestigious event draws participants and spectators from around the world to witness top athletes compete in these exhilarating water sports against the backdrop of the stunning Fuerteventura coastline. The atmosphere during the championships is electric, filled with the spirit of competition and appreciation for the beauty and power of the sea.
Sotavento beach and its surroundings also offer a welcoming environment for visitors who may not be inclined towards these high-energy water activities.
The natural beauty of the lagoon and the beach itself beckons one to relax and take in the awe-inspiring views.
Playa Esmeralda and Playa de Costa Calma
Playa Esmeralda is indeed a hidden gem along the coastline, offering a more secluded and tranquil atmosphere compared to the bustling playa de Costa Calma. The smaller size of Playa Esmeralda allows for a more intimate beach experience, making it perfect for relaxation and enjoying the natural beauty of the area without the crowds.
Families with children will particularly appreciate the peaceful setting of Playa Esmeralda, as it provides an ideal environment for little ones to play and explore safely. Moreover, the presence of essential amenities such as toilets, showers, and foot-washing taps enhances the overall convenience and comfort for beachgoers.
As if the natural charm wasn’t enough, Playa Esmeralda also caters to visitors with a beach bar located at the end of the beach, offering a delightful spot to savor refreshments and light bites while soaking in the panoramic views of the coastline.
Costa Calma beach attracts visitors with its two kilometers of soft sand and blue water.
You will find it behind the village of La Lajita.
One of the distinctive features of Costa Calma beach is its protection from strong winds, courtesy of the surrounding hotels and apartments, creating a serene and inviting environment for sunbathers and water enthusiasts. Whether one seeks peaceful moments of solitude or engaging water activities, Costa Calma beach offers a diverse range of experiences against the backdrop of its captivating coastal scenery.
Things to do
Certainly! Costa Calma is not only a paradise for water sports enthusiasts but also a haven for shopping enthusiasts. With some shopping centers and shops, you’ll have a plethora of options to explore and indulge in retail therapy. Even if you happen to forget to pack some essential clothing items, there’s no need to worry. You’ll likely find everything you need right here, allowing you to seamlessly transition from a refreshing dip in the sea to an exciting island excursion. And if you’re looking for more entertainment, you can be sure that any hotel or resort in the area can help you with your leisure needs.
There’s always something exciting to discover and experience, ensuring that your time in Costa Calma is nothing short of extraordinary.
Things do around
Before arriving in Costa Calma (more or less in La Lajita), there is one of the most visited attractions in the south of the island: the Oasis Park, which includes a botanical garden where you can see many species of native plants of Fuerteventura and the Canary Islands.
The entrance ticket includes a visit to the park with all its animals and the botanical garden.
If you prefer in one or the other, the choice is yours.
However, if you want to see everything, you should plan a whole day.
Shopping
If you prefer shopping, you will find countless stores along the beach promenade of Morro Jable that you can discover while strolling around.
There are also some small shopping centers in Costa Calma, but I personally prefer the beach promenade of Morro Jable.
