The Mercado de las tradiciones of La Oliva
The Mercado de las Tradiciones, (Market of Traditions), holds a special place in the heart of La Oliva, nestled within a historic building just a stone’s throw away from the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria and the main square. This quaint market springs to life every Tuesday and Friday, welcoming visitors from 9:00 in the morning until 2:00 in the afternoon. Here, you can explore the rich tapestry of the island’s traditions through its locally sourced goods, from enticing culinary treats to unique handmade crafts.
The products of the market
The market offers fresh products that come directly from the crops of local farmers. You can find fruits and vegetables, artisan jams, cheeses, olive oil and bread, among many other foods. You will also have the chance to see the best crafts and artistic creations in the area.
And thanks to this, people who visit the market have the opportunity to purchase the highest quality products.
Casa del Coronel and its history
The Coronel’s House, located in the town of La Oliva, holds significant historical value as it is part of the renowned “Route of the Colonels.” Originally owned by the colonels, the house was generously donated by Sebastiana Cabrera to her son, Pedro Manrique de Lara y Cabrera (1803-1881), in 1840, to provide a home for him and his wife.
The restoration of the building in 2013 marked a pivotal moment, transforming it into the esteemed venue known as the “Mercado de las tradiciones.” This market serves as a vibrant hub where artisans and small self-employed entrepreneurs showcase and sell their meticulously crafted products. Here, visitors can immerse themselves in a diverse array of offerings, including cheeses, olive oil, traditional pastries, aloe vera, organic vegetables, ornamental plants, palm crafts, and intricate openwork. It’s not just a market; it’s a celebration of local craftsmanship and a testament to the agricultural and artisanal heritage of the area.
