The Government of the Canary Islands has issued pre-alerts for wind and coastal phenomena. The alerts are due to the approaching Atlantic storm Garoé. This storm is expected to bring significant weather changes to the region.
The wind pre-alert will be in effect starting at midnight on January 21. This alert is particularly relevant for the midlands and highland areas of the northwest regions. Residents and visitors in these areas are urged to take precautions. Strong winds can lead to hazardous conditions. They make outdoor activities dangerous.
Additionally, the coastal phenomena pre-alert will commence at 03:00 on January 21. This warning affects all of the Canary Islands. It particularly focuses on the north and west coasts of La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote. Moreover, the northern coasts of Tenerife and Gran Canaria are also included in this alert. Such areas are to experience very severe sea conditions, prompting authorities to suggest caution along beaches and coastal areas.
Anticipated sea conditions are severe, with swells reaching heights of 3 to 5 meters. Winds are expected to shift to a northerly direction by January 22. This shift can exacerbate the situation and cause further challenges for maritime activities. The public is advised to stay updated with local weather forecasts. They should follow guidelines issued by local authorities. Avoid unnecessary travel during the storm’s impact.
Self-protection recommendations
The Government of the Canary Islands urges the public to take extreme precautions. People should be especially careful along the coasts in case of coastal phenomena. Key recommendations include avoiding docks and jetties, postponing nautical activities, and refraining from swimming at remote beaches. Additionally, avoid excursions in wind-affected areas and exercise caution while traveling on roads due to potential obstacles.
